Assisted Dying & the Right to Die Debate (CBC Curio) Canadian doctors and patients are navigating the newly granted right to die under a broad Supreme Court decision on assisted dying. As we enter the farthest ethical frontier, this theme documents a new reality where doctors are allowed to take a life and where we as a country must decide on the circumstances under which they can.
Bullying (CBC Curio) This theme explores the impact of social media, the diverse forms bullying can take, and what we can do to stop it.
Canada & Free Trade (CBC Curio) This theme examines free trade agreements and other major trade accords that have contributed to Canada's economic development.
Canada's Peacekeeping Legacy (CBC Curio) Canada's contribution to peacekeeping has long been a part of its history. This theme looks at Canadian participation in United Nations-led peacekeeping missions.
Canadian Parliamentary Democracy (CBC Curio) This theme presents an overview of Canada's parliamentary system. Students will gain insight into the role of Members of Parliament and the basic structure and functions of the House of Commons and Senate. We also examine some of the more recent hot-button issues in Canadian parliamentary life, including calls to address what some perceive as a “democratic deficit”, whether by means of Senate reform, coalition governments or changes to Canada’s electoral system, such as introducing proportional representation.
Cannabis Legislation (CBC Curio) Since October 2018, Canadian adults can legally purchase and consume recreational marijuana. The provinces and territories are responsible for the practical implementation of legalization. While the legalization of cannabis is creating business opportunities for some, others worry about the impact of relaxed laws on consumption among youth. This theme looks at how cannabis legalization impacts Canadians.

Fighting Racism & Discrimination (CBC Curio) This theme looks at the fight against discrimination and racism in Canada. It includes examples of ongoing efforts across the country to remove barriers to equity, diversity and inclusion and to reduce inequities in all sectors of society.

These drugs are often prescribed by doctors to combat pain, but are so powerful that many patients quickly become addicted to them. And the number of prescriptions issued in Canada is the highest globally. This theme focuses on this growing public health crisis.
Policing in Canada (CBC Curio) This theme examines all aspects of policing in Canada, from crime prevention strategies to police-community relations and recent debates about defunding.
Privacy & Data Protection (CBC Curio) This theme explores the issues of data protection and privacy legislation, while also considering how we can ensure companies become more transparent in disclosing the personal data they collect from their customers.
Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CBC Curio) This theme focuses on the experiences lived by refugees and asylum seekers adjusting to life in Canada while also examining the ambivalence felt on the issue by some Canadians. “Refugees are people who have fled their countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution. They are not able to return home. They have seen or experienced many horrors. A refugee is different from an immigrant. An immigrant is a person who chooses to settle permanently in another country. Refugees are forced to flee.” — How Canada’s refugee system works, Government of Canada.
Wrongful Convictions in Canada (CBC Curio) "Wrongful convictions undermine the two prongs of the criminal justice system's legitimacy," states a 1992 report prepared by the Library of Parliament. "If someone is wrongfully convicted, that person is punished for an offence he or she did not commit and the actual perpetrator of the crime goes free." Each miscarriage of justice deals a blow to a society's confidence in the legal system, experts say. This theme put a spotlight on cases where the courts got it wrong.
