Resource Sharing and Interlibrary Loan

You can now request print books from Belleville campus to be delivered to the Port Hope, Tyendinaga, or Bancroft campuses.

How do I place a request?

1. Visit www.loyalistlibrary.com and use Catalyst to search for the book you need. You cans search by the title, the name of the author, or a topic:

2. On the results screen, use the filters on the left side to limit the results to print books in the Library. 

 

3. Click the title of the book you want. A new screen will open, and you should see the request option. Remember! You must be signed into your library account to see this option and to request books.

 

4. Fill out the request form. In the Comment section, please let us know where you want the book to be sent - Port Hope, Bancroft, or Tyendinaga.

 

5. Library staff will find the book and have it delivered to your campus. Please Note! Mailing materials can take several days. Library staff will also send a message to your Loyalist College email explaining where to pick up your book and how to return it free of charge.

What is interlibrary loan?

This free, year-round service lets you borrow books and articles from other Ontario college libraries. It's a great way to find resources that are not available in the Loyalist College Library. 

What's the different between interlibrary loan and resource sharing?

Interlibrary loan and resource sharing essentially mean the same thing. Different libraries will use different terms for this service, so you might see one or the other on different library websites. Some libraries use "resource sharing" for electronic materials and "interlibrary loan" for print materials. Here at the Loyalist College Library, we use "interlibrary loan" for both.
 

How long does it take to get something I've requested?

It can take between 7 and 10 days for books and articles to be found and delivered by mail or email. If you need something for a project or assignment, it’s always better to submit requests early. 
 

Who can request books and articles?

Any current student or employee at Loyalist College can request books and articles. This includes everyone at our Port Hope and Bancroft campuses too!
 

What can I borrow?

You can request print books, and print or electronic articles. You can request books for projects and assignments, or something to read just for fun – novels, graphic novels and comics, short stories and more! 
 

What is the form used for?

For now, the new form is used only for print books. And you can still request books in person or by email.
 

What if I need an article?

You can still request articles by email or in person. The form for requesting articles should be available in early 2025.
 

Can I use interlibrary loan if I'm not at the Belleville campus?

Yes! Send your requests using the method described in the next tab. When you fill out the form, use the Comment section to tell library staff what campus the item needs to be sent to. You will receive a message in your Loyalist College email explaining where you can pick your item up and how you can return it free of charge.

How do I use the form to request a book from another library?

It's easy!

1. Open Catalyst and login to your library account. Remember! Your library login is the same as your MyLoyalist login.

2. Search for the book or article you need using Catalyst first. It's possible we already have it!

3. If the Loyalist College Library does not have what you need, click on the Interlibrary Loan Request link at the top of the screen:

 

4. A blank form will open. Fill in as much information as you have. Hint! The more specific you can be, the better. Always request a specific title, not just a topic.

Hint! If possible, paste the citation for the item you want into the Comment box at the bottom of the form. This will give you all of the information you need to fill out the form, and will also help library staff to find the correct item for you.

Please Note! We also ship to the Bancroft and Port Hope campuses! If you are at Port Hope or Bancroft, please include this information in the Comment box, to make sure that the book is sent to you.

5. When you have entered as much information as you have, click "Send Request" at the bottom of the form. You will receive a message to show the request was submitted. 
 

What if the form is not available?

The form may not be available if: 

  • You are not logged in to your account 
  • You are not a current Loyalist College student or employee 
  • You already have more than 5 active requests.

What happens next?

Library staff will look for the book you requested. You will get a notification in your Loyalist College email to tell you if it was found and when it can be picked up. You will also get a notification if the book can't be found. If the book can't be found, library staff will be happy to help you find alternative sources.
 

What if I need an article?

This form is currently only used to request books. The form for articles should be available in early 2025. Until then, you can request articles by emailing jdupuis@loyalistcollege.com

 

What if I attend classes in Bancroft, Port Hope, or Tyendinaga?

This service can be used by all students at all campuses. If you are in Bancroft, Port Hope, or Tyendinaga, please add that information in the Comment section of the form. This will tell library staff where to send the item you've requested.
