Open Educational Resources: Welcome

Welcome!

Welcome to the Open Educational Resources Guide at the Parrott Centre. This guide contains a selection of resources on open educational resources - or, OERs.

Not sure how to get started? Take some time to explore the guide, or contact the Library. We can be reached by email or by calling (613) 969-1913, Ext. 2249. Support for OERs can also be found through the Centre for Leadership, Learning, and Academic Excellence (CLLAE).

This guide contains a selection of resources on Open Educational Resources, or OERs.

These resources are organized by type. Remember! Catalyst, the Library's search, can be used to search all of these resources at once. The "Journals and Databases" tab shows a selection of journals and magazines on this topic, and a list of databases that can be searched for information. The "Books and eBooks" tab shows a selection of new books on this topic, a list of books recommended by faculty, and shows where to find books on this topic on the Library's shelves. The "Films" tab shows a selection of streaming videos on this topic, and a list of the streaming services that can be accessed through the Library. The "Open Educational Resources" tab shows a selection of open resources, including journals, textbooks, open courses, and more. This guide also includes links to the Library's videos and the APA Style Guide. The "How Do I Research?" tab explains the research process, including how to use Catalyst. Throughout the guide, there are also links that can be used to contact library staff for help.

Using this guide will help you to do the following:

  • Discover new resources about this topic
  • Find tools to help with APA Style, including how to reference information correctly
  • Learn how to use the Catalyst search to find useful, relevant information

The Parrott Centre Library uses research guide to help students and faculty find relevant information on a specific topic or area of study. The information and resources in these guides is available to all Loyalist College students and employees, at all Loyalist campuses. The research guides are created using software called "LibGuides"; sometimes, library staff might use this term instead of "research guides".

Feedback and suggestions about the Research Guides are welcome and appreciated; use any of the contact links in the guide to share feedback or suggestions.

Students and employees can ask for help at any time by contacting the Library by email, phone, or in person:

Please Note! Library staff monitor their email and phones during opening hours. If a request for help is sent outside of these hours, staff will reply when the Library re-opens.

Whether you're using resources from the Library or the web, it's important to evaluate what you're reading! Is it accurate? Credible? And how do you know? The Learning Portal has a great guide to help you get started.

OER: The Basics

What are Open Educational Resources, or OERs?
"Open Educational Resources, or OER, refer to any teaching and learning materials that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open licence, such as a Creative Commons License or GNU General Public License, that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution with no or limited restrictions".

What does OER include?
"Full courses, learning objects, tests or any other tools, materials, or techniques for use in teaching, learning, and research." This could include - but is not limited to - open textbooks, journals, videos, lesson plans, software, and games.

Why use OERs?
There are a number of benefits for both faculty and students when it comes to using open resources!

  • Student costs are reduced. This has the potential to reduce student stress and increase retention.
  • Materials are easy to find, allowing students to begin working ahead, even before classes begin.
  • Open materials can often be customized, allowing faculty to tailor materials to better suit their courses. Resources become more relevant and engaging!

Open resources allow users to engage in what David Wiley describes as the 5R Activities:

  • Retain: The right to make, own, and control copies of the content (e.g., download, duplicate, store, and manage)
  • Reuse: The right to use the content in a wide range of ways (e.g., in a class, in a study group, on a website, in a video)
  • Revise: The right to adapt, adjust, modify, or alter the content itself (e.g., translate the content into another language)
  • Remix: The right to combine the original or revised content with other material to create something new (e.g., incorporate the content into a mashup)
  • Redistribute: The right to share copies of the original content, your revisions, or your remixes with others (e.g., give a copy of the content to a friend)
