Delivering Culturally Competent Nursing Care by Newly revised and updated, Delivering Culturally Competent Nursing Care, Second Edition, explores the cross-cultural interactions and conflicts between nurses and the diverse array of patients they may see. Culturally competent nurses can cut through preconceptions, reduce health disparities, and deliver high-quality care as they encounter patients from a range of backgrounds and beliefs. As frontline providers for diverse populations, nurses are expected to treat each patient with empathy and respect. This text addresses what it really means to be culturally competent in nursing practice. As representatives of specific cultural, racial, ethnic, and sociopolitical groups, nurses bring their own values, beliefs, and attitudes to all interactions with patients and with one another. Whether or not nurses choose to make their attitudes explicit, these attitudes ultimately influence the quality of care they provide to patients. The content of this book is grounded in the Staircase Model, which builds upon the nurse's own self-assessment to identify personal limitations, find strategies to improve cultural competence, and progress to the next level. This text features case scenarios that apply the process of cultural competence to different healthcare situations. How to Treat People: a Nurse's Notes by As a teenager, Molly Case underwent an operation that saved her life. Nearly a decade later, she finds herself in the operating room again--this time as a trainee nurse. She learns to care for her patients, sharing not only their pain, but also life-affirming moments of hope. In doing so, she offers a compelling account of the processes that keep them alive, from respiratory examinations to surgical prep, and of the extraordinary moments of human connection that sustain both nurse and patient. In rich, lyrical prose, Case illustrates the intricacies of the human condition through the hand of a stranger offered in solace, a gentle word in response to fear and anger, or the witnessing of a person's last breaths. It is these moments of empathy, in the extremis of human experience, that define us as people. But when Molly's father is admitted to the cardiac unit where she works, the professional and the personal suddenly collide.Weaving together medical history, art, memoir, and science, How to Treat People beautifully explores the oscillating rhythms of life and death in a tender reminder that we can all find meaning in being, even for a moment, part of the lives of others.

Correctional Health Care Services by This book brings together the principles and practices of health care for incarcerated populations. It references national standards and legal precedents and cites recognized experts and authorities. It describes serious mistakes that have occurred and discusses strategies for the future. The chapters in this book focus on four specific branches of health care services: mental health, infectious disease, dentistry, and addiction rehabilitation. To deliver effective health care in corrections, including prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities, the directors of these facilities and the health care staff need to understand not only the clinical aspects of their patients but their special needs. Those funding or planning for these programs must consider the needs of those special groups who are incarcerated. They include: members of often-underserved groups, including women, the elderly, minorities, and juveniles. Additional ways these groups and others in the prison environment are underserved include in their treatment for infectious diseases, dental health issues, and mental health, as well as for substance abuse problems. The author who has practical hands-on experience with correctional health care suggests what types of environments lead to positive outcomes and offers concrete and often cost-effective suggestions. One of the surprising suggestions is to encourage exercise programs as a cost-effective method to provide increased good health and to keep the peace. This book reflects the experience of a seasoned administrator, writer, and accreditation specialist in the field of correctional health care. It will prove to be invaluable to correctional officers, health care providers, justice and legal professionals, social workers, mental health care professionals, and counselors.

Indigenous peoples and dementia : new understandings of memory loss and memory care by "Dementia is on the rise around the world, and health organizations in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand are increasingly responding to the urgent need - voiced by communities and practitioners - for guidance on how best to address memory loss in Indigenous communities. Indigenous Peoples and Dementia responds to this call by bringing together, for the first time, research on three key areas of concern: prevalence, causes, and public discourse; Indigenous perspectives on care and prevention; and the culturally safe application of research to Elder care. The discussions are organized thematically and are complemented by teaching interludes - stories or dialogues that impart Indigenous knowledge about memory loss and memory care. The contributors address the complexities of memory loss and dementia in a variety of Indigenous communities, casting doubt on the appropriateness of the current push for early diagnosis and treatment, as this approach may not meet the needs of Indigenous communities, given their differing worldviews and focus on holism and interconnectedness. Elders are the knowledge keepers and valued members of a declining cohort. Collectively, the contributors to this innovative volume demonstrate that in order to ensure that they receive culturally safe care, diagnosis and treatment must be grounded in collaborative research informed by Indigenous knowledge and nation-specific or place-based cultural understandings."-- Provided by publisher.

Prescribing Medicines for Children by Prescribing for children is a particularly challenging discipline due to specific issues of drug absorption, metabolism, distribution and excretion. The aim of this book is to improve understanding in all aspects of paediatric prescribing, from the development of suitable drugs through to their practical administration. With its origins in the EU-funded Global Research in Paediatrics (GRiP) project this is the first truly international textbook to provide guidance on the principles behind optimal neonatal and paediatric prescribing. Harnessing the international expertise of paediatricians and pharmacists in the field, Prescribing Medicines for Children compliments the British National Formulary for Children (BNFC), facilitating translation of essential pharmacological principles into good prescribing practice. It incorporates specific information on how to promote safe and effective prescribing in paediatrics, including how to avoid medication errors and adverse drug reactions in children. Highlights include the differences in prescribing habits between countries and the shared principles that underpin rational prescribing in paediatrics and neonatology. The book is divided into two sections: Section A provides concise educational material relating to paediatric pharmacology and optimising how medicines are developed and prescribed for children. Section B considers key clinical prescribing areas and can be used as a quick reference guide. Each chapter is focused on the key issues in prescribing for a respective clinical specialty or context. Prescribing Medicines for Children is essential reading for all those who are involved in prescribing medicines to neonates and children. This includes undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacists, nurses, paediatricians and primary care physicians, academic scientists, and those working in the pharmaceutical industry and drug regulation.

Integrative Medicine for Vulnerable Populations by This first-of-its-kind title addresses the failures of an often fragmented healthcare system in managing vulnerable patients with multiple, chronic, co-morbid conditions -- patients who are frequently unresponsive to the methods and approaches used to treat other patients with conditions that are less complicated. The book emphasizes a holistic evaluation to patient care that looks at the whole patient, providing comprehensive formulations that describe the interacting problems that afflict the patient, including elements that are barriers to effective treatment of active medical problems and barriers to recovery. The book begins by defining integrated care, discussing the types of patients who benefit from this approach and some of the models of care, including financing, barriers to acceptance, and advocacy for patients. The second section discusses the structural elements of integrated care, including the building of a team approach, issues of leadership, and role definition, as well as the authors' experiences in overcoming some of the problems. In the remaining sections, the book discusses major complicating features of the patients seen in integrative care settings, including a description of the kinds of problems, a model for formulation of patient cases, and successful approaches to treatment of these problems. Finally, some of the real-world applications where integrative care provides better outcomes is covered, including in terms of addictions, medically complex patients, and chronic pain patients. Integrative Medicine for Vulnerable Populations - A Clinical Guide to Working with Chronic and Comorbid Medical Disease, Mental Illness, and Addiction is a major contribution to the clinical literature and will be of great interest to health care professionals, administrators, policy stakeholders, and even interested patients and patient advocates.
